The Open Educational Resources (OER) Working Group invites you to celebrate Open Education Week (March 2-6) by joining Drs. Jocelly Meiners and Anel Brandl as they discuss their recent Open Education project, Estamos aquí! Comunidades bilingües e identidades regionales de los Estados Unidos.
Estamos aqui! is a new Open Educational Resource (OER) designed for intermediate-level learners of Spanish as a Heritage Language (SHL). Developed collaboratively by five SHL educators, the textbook responds to the need for openly accessible, culturally sustaining materials that reflect the linguistic realities, histories, and identities of US Latine communities.
Focusing on US Spanish, Estamos aquí! explores the histories, cultures, linguistic practices, and identities of Latine communities in all regions of the country. Integrating Open Pedagogy, Multiliteracies, Critical Language Awareness, Raciolinguistics, and Community Engagement and Service-Learning frameworks, the textbook offers strategies for active, reflective, and participatory learning. The presentation will foreground processes of localization, illustrating how the materials can be adapted to center local communities, regional identities, and instructional needs, while enacting open pedagogy principles.
This online event is free and open to the UT community. However, registration is required. Once you've registered, you'll receive a link to join via Zoom, along with a calendar invitation to download. We look forward to seeing you March 3rd!
